Ruben Blades
Active in New York's salsa scene in the 1970s, Ruben Blades was born in 1948 in Panama City and later moved to the United States, where he became part of the Fania label circle as a songwriter and singer. Ruben Blades drew attention together with Willie Colón on albums such as “Metiendo Mano!” (1977) and “Siembra” (1978), which established an urban salsa with narrative lyrics rooted in observations of everyday Latin American life. From the 1980s onward, Ruben Blades developed a career under his own name with the group Seis del Solar, mixing salsa, Latin jazz, rock and Afro‑Caribbean influences on records like “Buscando América” (1984) and “Caminando” (1991), while touring extensively across Latin America, the United States and Europe. His writing remains marked by social and political themes, a taste for fictional characters and a singing style often close to spoken storytelling. In the 2000s Ruben Blades continued this trajectory between Panama and the international stage with projects of varied aesthetics, from “Mundo” (2002) to his recordings with Roberto Delgado & Orquesta, including “Salsa Big Band” (2017), while also pursuing an acting career and engagement in Panamanian public life.
