Grupo Niche

Founded in Bogotá in 1979 by composer and musical director Jairo Varela together with trombonist Alexis Lozano, Grupo Niche quickly established itself as a Colombian salsa orchestra associated with the Cali scene, where the group settled in the early 1980s. Built around a large brass section, Afro‑Caribbean percussion and multiple vocalists, the ensemble developed a style that blends 'salsa dura', more romantic numbers and descriptive pieces inspired by urban life and Colombia's Pacific regions. Grupo Niche attracted attention with tracks like 'Buenaventura y Caney' and with the album No hay quinto malo (1984), which includes 'Cali Pachanguero', a song that became emblematic of Cali salsa, and later with Cielo de tambores (1990), featuring songs such as 'Una aventura' and 'Busca por dentro'. Over the decades the group renewed its singers — including stints by vocalists like Tito Gómez and Charlie Cardona — while maintaining collective chorus writing and characteristic rhythmic arrangements. Very active on stage, the orchestra toured extensively across Latin America, Europe and North America, presenting a repertoire that interweaves social chronicles, festive celebrations and portraits of Colombian cities. After Jairo Varela's death in 2012 in Cali, Grupo Niche continued under the musical direction of trumpeter José Aguirre, who preserved the ensemble's salsa orientation.
