Petri Nygård

Born in Kristianstad, Sweden and associated with Tampere, Petri Nygård — real name Petri Jukka Mikael Laurila — has developed since the late 1980s a brand of Finnish rap characterized by blunt humour, deliberately provocative lyrics and writing that centres on partying, sex and everyday slang. His career began in the duo Nuera, founded in 1989 with Henry Kapral, where he appeared under the name Dream on several cassettes, EPs and albums within the local hip‑hop scene. In the early 2000s Petri Nygård went solo and made an impression with the track “Vitun suomirokki”, followed by the albums Mun levy! (2000), Petri presidentixi (2001) and Hovinarrin paluu! (2002). He then took a detour into English under the alias Travis Bicle with the album Committed (2007), before returning as Petri Nygård in 2009 with Kaikkee pitää olla. Since then his work has been largely focused on the Finnish club and festival circuit, with albums such as Kaikki tai ei mitään (2011), Mun mielestä (2012), Valmis mihin vaan (2013) and Alaston Suåmi (2020). Petri Nygård has also engaged in numerous one‑off collaborations — notably with Mokoma, Lord Est, Mariska and Vesku Jokinen — while maintaining a direct, satirical and intentionally outrageous rap style.
