Roberto Fonseca

Born in Havana in 1975, pianist and composer Roberto Fonseca belongs to the Afro‑Cuban jazz tradition, blending the island’s musical heritage with jazz composition and influences from contemporary music. Trained at the conservatory, he emerged on the Havana scene in the 1990s and gained notice with the group Temperamento before joining international tours associated with the Buena Vista Social Club, notably alongside Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo. Established as a solo artist, he developed from Zamazu (2007) an aesthetic that combines son (son cubano), rumba, bolero and modern jazz, continued with Akokan (2009), ABUC (2016) and Yesun (2019). His projects alternate between trio formats, larger ensembles and collaborations with singers from Cuba and other Latin American scenes, and he is regularly programmed at jazz festivals across Europe and North America.
