Alfredo Rodriguez
Born in Havana in 1985, Alfredo Rodríguez trained in classical piano at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory, at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory, and then at the Instituto Superior de Arte, before directing his playing toward jazz. His career took a turn after his participation in the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006, where Quincy Jones noticed him and then accompanied him in developing his international career. Based in the United States from 2009, Alfredo Rodríguez is building a language that crosses contemporary jazz, Cuban traditions, Latin music, and piano writing stemming from his classical training. In trios as in solos, his approach blends tight rhythmic lines, highly structured improvisation, and particular attention to dynamics inherited from Afro-Cuban musics. Among his discographic references are Sounds of Space (2012), The Invasion Parade (2014), Tocororo (2016), The Little Dream (2018), Dialogue with Pedrito Martinez (2019) and Coral Way (2023). Alfredo Rodríguez has also collaborated with Pedrito Martinez and participated in projects related to Quincy Jones, while performing on jazz stages in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. For Alfredo Rodríguez, virtuosity remains linked to a search for rhythmic and melodic clarity, between Cuban heritage and the open formats of contemporary jazz.
