Gonzalo Rubalcaba

Born in Havana in 1963 into a family of musicians, Gonzalo Rubalcaba emerged on the Cuban scene in the early 1980s before rapidly expanding his career internationally. After touring with Orquesta Aragón in 1983, he founded Grupo Proyecto in 1985 and developed a repertoire spanning jazz, Latin jazz, Afro‑Cuban jazz, jazz fusion and classical references. His piano approach blends Cuban rhythms, modern jazz improvisation and dense harmonic writing, both as a soloist and in trio settings. His discography includes Discovery: Live at Montreux (1990), The Blessing (1991), Rapsodia (1994), Antiguo (1998), Supernova (2001), Solo (2005), Faith (2010), Suite Caminos (2015), Skyline (2021) with Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette, and Borrowed Roses (2023). Over his career he has also performed and recorded with Charlie Haden, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John Patitucci and Al Di Meola. Present at jazz festivals, in clubs and in transatlantic creative projects, Gonzalo Rubalcaba has for decades moved between acoustic formats, Cuban repertoire and international collaborations.
