Rick Astley
Born in Newton-le-Willows in northwest England, Rick Astley initially trained as a drummer with the local band FBI before being noticed within the orbit of producer trio Stock Aitken Waterman, who accompanied his move toward danceable pop tinged with soul. Astley established himself in the late 1980s with an immediately recognisable deep voice and a repertoire straddling dance-pop, blue-eyed soul and adult pop, driven by the albums Whenever You Need Somebody (1987) and Hold Me in Your Arms (1988). In the early 1990s he shifted toward a more soul- and R&B-oriented sound on Free (1991) and Body and Soul (1993), before partly withdrawing from the music industry for several years. His return continued with Keep It Turned On (2001) and later more personal projects such as Portrait (2005), 50 (2016), Beautiful Life (2018) and Are We There Yet? (2023), where writing and performance increasingly favour classic pop-rock and soul formats. His name is also associated with the internet phenomenon of “rickrolling,” which brought his catalogue back into popular culture from the 2000s onward without altering the course of a singer rooted in the British melodic tradition.
