Renaud García-Fons

Born in Paris in 1962, Renaud Garcia-Fons has since the 1980s developed a career situated between jazz, Mediterranean music, Oriental traditions and contemporary writing. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris under François Rabbath, he imposes on the double bass a very singing style, both arco and pizzicato, with particular attention to melodic lines, modes and the flows between scholarly and popular repertoires. After beginnings in jazz, notably with Roger Guérin, he played with L’Orchestre de Contrebasses from 1987 to 1993 and also participated in the National Jazz Orchestra directed by Claude Barthélemy. His discography as leader begins with Légendes (1992), followed by Alboreá (1995), Oriental Bass (1997), Fuera with Jean-Louis Matinier (1999), then Navigatore (2001), Entremundo (2004), Arcoluz (2006) and La Linea Del Sur (2009). Over the course of projects, he has worked with musicians such as Nguyên Lê, Kudsi Erguner, Dhafer Youssef, David Dorantes and Claire Antonini, in solo, duo or trio formats. Albums such as La Vie Devant Soi (2017), Farangi (2019), Le Souffle des cordes (2021) and Blue Maqam (2024) extend this open aesthetic, where the double bass becomes a passerelle between flamenco, chamber jazz and soundscapes of the Mediterranean rim.
