Ravi Coltrane
American saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, born in 1965 on Long Island, New York, grew up between the East Coast and Los Angeles in an environment shaped by the musical legacy of his parents, John and Alice Coltrane. Trained in part at the California Institute of the Arts, he established himself on the New York jazz scene in the early 1990s, first gaining attention as a sideman before developing his own groups. Primarily active on tenor and soprano saxophones, he works within contemporary post‑bop jazz, often using modular structures that combine precise composition, open spaces for improvisation and a restrained melodic approach. His early albums as a leader — including Moving Pictures (1998), From the Round Box (2000) and Mad 6 (2002) — were followed by In Flux (2005) and Blending Times (2009), which confirm an aesthetic characterized by supple rhythms, pared‑down sax lines and a measured use of polyrhythm. With Spirit Fiction (2012), released on Blue Note, he deepened a language in which tightly worked compositions coexist with freer pieces. Regularly invited to play in ensembles led by Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette or Geri Allen, he alternates leading quartets and quintets with collaborative appearances on club and festival stages in the United States and abroad.
