Nils Wülker
On trumpet, Nils Wülker has been developing a contemporary jazz rooted in Germany and largely oriented toward the European scene since the early 2000s. Born in 1977 in Bonn and later based in Hamburg, Wülker has built a career in which melodic writing plays a central role, often driven by grooves close to soul, funk and pop. His first album as a bandleader, High Spirits (2002), announced the arrival of a musician committed to a clear tone and structured song forms; he has evolved this approach across subsequent records, notably Safely Falling (2007) and Up (2015), toward more electric textures and nu-jazz atmospheres. Leading varying ensembles—from quartet to large studio groups—Wülker alternates club work, festival appearances and collaborations with instrumentalists and singers from jazz, soul and pop, while keeping the trumpet at the heart of his writing. The albums On (2017), GO (2020) and Continuum (2022) continue his search for a balance between improvisation, repetitive motifs and singable choruses, situating Wülker in a landscape where German jazz connects with contemporary aesthetics without abandoning its acoustic tradition.
