Photek

Under the name Photek, Rupert Parkes has developed since the early 1990s a central career in British electronic music, first from St Albans in England and later from Los Angeles, where he settled. Coming from a background shaped by hip‑hop, jazz and soul, he established himself on the jungle and drum and bass scene with productions also released under the aliases Studio Pressure, Aquarius and The Sentinel, before releasing his first record as Photek in 1994. His writing was then marked by sharply cut rhythms, minimal tension and a precise attention to sonic space, particularly evident on Modus Operandi (1997) and Form & Function (1998). With Solaris (2000) Photek shifted his approach toward forms closer to house and minimalism, without abandoning the rhythmic rigour of his early work; he continued this evolution on Form & Function Vol. 2 (2007) and KU:PALM (2012), between bass music, downtempo and soundtrack textures. Alongside his sets and productions, Photek has developed work as a composer for film, television and video games, and has produced remixes for artists such as Daft Punk, Moby and Bob Marley and the Wailers.
