Moon King
Born in Toronto, Moon King takes shape around the Canadian songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Benjamin, who was initially active in the early 2010s as a touring drummer for Grimes, Doldrums or Sean Nicholas Savage before developing this solo project. His music moves between synth-pop, dream pop, electronic pop and indie rock, with a marked fondness for hazy textures, bright melodies and, over time, rhythms increasingly oriented toward disco and dance. The early EPs, Obsession I in 2012 and Obsession II in 2013, establish this writing between pop romance and vaporous production. For several years, Moon King also existed on stage as a band led with Maddy Wilde, in a circuit shared with acts like Austra, TOPS, Alvvays, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Majical Cloudz or Mr Twin Sister. Secret Life released in 2015, then the project evolves after Daniel Benjamin's move to Detroit, a move that accompanies the more direct and nocturnal direction of Hamtramck ’16 in 2017. This inflection continues with Voice of Lovers in 2019, The Audition in 2021 and Roses in 2024, Moon King refining a pop language where dreamy guitars, synthetic textures and club pulsation intersect.
