The Juan MacLean
Emerging from Providence's indie scene and later developing in New York around the DFA Records label, The Juan MacLean is the electronic project of John MacLean, former guitarist of Six Finger Satellite. After that band dissolved in the 1990s, John MacLean stepped away from music for a while, then resumed recording in the early 2000s with the support of James Murphy, who released his first tracks on DFA. The Juan MacLean occupies a crossroads of electronica, dance-punk, house and nu-disco, favoring club-oriented structures, crisp synth lines and a marked taste for extended formats. The project also took on a collective dimension through the recurring presence of Nancy Whang, whose vocals became a central element of several songs and live shows. Following the early singles of the 2000s, The Juan MacLean released the albums Less Than Human (2005), The Future Will Come (2009) and In a Dream (2014), while continuing a parallel activity focused on DJing and maxi singles. Its trajectory remains tied to the DFA-era New York dance scene, between electronic songwriting, melodic house and a post-punk pulse.
