Michèle Bernard

Born in Lyon in 1947, Michèle Bernard has pursued since the 1970s a career as a singer, songwriter and actress rooted in the French chanson tradition. She emerged on the singer-songwriter and café‑theatre circuits before developing a body of work in which narrative writing, a talent for portraiture and a constant attention to social realities intersect. Her repertoire belongs to the chanson à texte aesthetic, sometimes close to folk and musical theatre, and her performances emphasize the clarity of the words and a direct relationship with the audience. Over the course of her shows, Michèle Bernard addresses recurring themes such as ordinary lives, the world of work, childhood, the memory of places, female figures and collective histories, expressed in a simple and precise language. Her career has been built both in venues and festivals devoted to chanson and in more theatrical stage forms, with projects also aimed at young audiences. Michèle Bernard thus occupies a distinctive place in the francophone chanson landscape, at the crossroads of recital, storytelling and theatre.
