MercyMe

Formed in the mid‑1990s in Greenville, Texas, MercyMe developed within the American contemporary Christian music scene around singer‑songwriter Bart Millard. Later based in the Dallas area, the band first built its reputation on church circuits and Christian festivals before breaking nationally with the 2001 album Almost There, which features the song “I Can Only Imagine,” a central piece in MercyMe’s story and later the basis for a biographical film. Musically, MercyMe moves between melodic pop rock, piano‑led ballads and more liturgical worship songs, with lyrics rooted in biblical imagery and everyday questions of faith. Albums such as Undone (2004), The Generous Mr. Lovewell (2010), Welcome to the New (2014) and Lifer (2017), followed by Inhale (Exhale) in 2021 and Always Only Jesus in 2022, mark different phases of writing—from congregational praise to a more pop‑oriented, narrative approach. Still active, MercyMe continues to tour regularly in venues and Christian gatherings across the United States, adapting their sound to contemporary pop rock while remaining identified with the evangelical worship current.
