Assassin
Originating from the Paris hip-hop scene, Assassin formed in the mid-1980s around brothers Rockin' Squat and Solo, together with DJ Clyde, during the early days of French rap. From the start they developed an independent stance and politically charged rap, driven by boom-bap rhythms, loops drawn from funk and soul, and dense writing focused on power relations, the media, social inequalities and artistic autonomy. After several early tracks in the late 1980s, Assassin appeared on the Rapattitude compilation in 1990, a key reference for that generation. The collective then organized itself through Assassin Productions and released the album L'Homicide volontaire in 1995, followed by Touche d'espoir in 2000. Over the 1990s the lineup evolved and Assassin became centered on Rockin' Squat while preserving an identity tied to self-production, militant hip-hop scenes and a frontal approach to rap. Throughout their career the music remained associated with a dry, direct and uncompromising sound, situated between hardcore rap, political consciousness and b-boy culture.
