Martin Dupont
Martin Dupont is a Marseille-based group founded in the early 1980s that has achieved cult status for its minimalist, cool and highly melodic writing. They drew a distinctive line between post-punk, new wave and electronic music—an approach that later resonated in aesthetics ranging from trip-hop to techno. Their imprint can be heard in artists such as Tricky, Madlib, Marcel Dettmann, Mick Wills and Theophilus London, who have sampled, remixed or referenced the band’s legacy. Between 1981 and 1987 the trio released three albums that established a dark, hypnotic and forward-looking sonic signature, and they shared stages with The Lotus Eaters, The Lounge Lizards and Siouxsie & the Banshees. In the late 1980s co-founder Alain Seghir put the project on hold to concentrate on a career in surgery, while Martin Dupont’s music continued to circulate underground, gradually gaining recognition as a hidden treasure among new listeners. More than three decades later, renewed interest in the United States—sparked by the New York label Minimal Wave—acted as a catalyst: Martin Dupont reformed and returned to touring, now joined onstage by Girls Like You and Olli (Ollivier Leroy), combining fidelity to their sound, synthetic tension and a regained live intensity, further propelling the quiet myth of a band that was ahead of its time.
