Los Angeles Azules
In the Iztapalapa neighborhood of Mexico City, Los Ángeles Azules formed in the late 1970s around the Mejía Avante siblings and quickly became part of the cumbia sonidera movement that animates the capital’s popular dances. The group developed a Mexican cumbia at mid-tempos, driven by prominent bass lines, melodic keyboards and brass arrangements, with lyrics focused on love, nostalgia and urban everyday life. After several recordings circulated through neighborhood sound systems, Los Ángeles Azules gained a national audience in the 1990s thanks to a series of romantic cumbias covered across the country, and gradually expanded their stage presence to Latin America and Latino communities in the United States. The lineup, which has remained family-run in its artistic direction, opened up from the 2010s to numerous collaborations with pop, rock and regional music singers, in studio and live, notably on the albums De Plaza en Plaza (2016), Esto Sí Es Cumbia (2018) and De Buenos Aires para el Mundo (2020). Today Los Ángeles Azules alternate between large stages, festivals and popular neighborhood parties, adapting their repertoire of traditional and urban cumbia to orchestral or more intimate formats.
