Luz Casal
Born in Boimorto, Galicia, Luz Casal grew up partly in Asturias before settling in Madrid, where she joined the Spanish pop-rock scene in the early 1980s. Her first albums, Luz (1982) and Los ojos del gato (1984), placed her in a rock and new wave register, with direct songwriting and arrangements marked by the pop of the time. Over the years Luz Casal broadened her repertoire toward more melodic pop, the ballad and Latin forms, while retaining a restrained delivery and an immediately recognizable deep timbre. A contraluz (1991) accompanied a turning point, when Pedro Almodóvar used her versions of "Piensa en mí" and "Un año de amor" in Tacones lejanos. Luz Casal continued this aesthetic shift with Como la flor prometida (1995), Vida tóxica (2007), La pasión (2009), focused on the bolero, and later Almas gemelas (2013), Que corra el aire (2018) and Las ventanas de mi alma (2023). Between rock, pop song and the Spanish-language repertoire, Luz Casal has for decades moved between stages in Spain, France and Latin America.
