Kittie

Formed in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1996 around sisters Morgan and Mercedes Lander, Kittie established itself in a metal register blending nu metal, groove metal, alternative metal and elements of metalcore. Initially made up of teenage female musicians, Kittie drew attention in the late 1990s with a sound built on very low‑tuned guitars, contrasts between screamed and clean vocals, and straightforward song structures. The debut album Spit (2000), propelled by the single “Brackish,” put Kittie on North American and European stages, including a slot on Ozzfest. Oracle (2001) emphasized a heavier, more thrash‑influenced approach, while Until the End (2004) and Funeral for Yesterday (2007) explored more melodic atmospheres without abandoning the band’s aggressive edge. With In the Black (2009) and I’ve Failed You (2011) Kittie reinforced a groove and death‑metal facet, driven by Tara McLeod’s guitar work and a dense rhythm section. After several changes of bassist and a period of reduced activity in the 2010s, Kittie gradually returned to the stage and released Fire in 2024, confirming the Canadian band’s place on the international metal scene with an identity centered on the complementary voices of Morgan Lander and Mercedes Lander’s pounding drumming.
