Apollo Brown
Producer and beatmaker based in Detroit, Apollo Brown crafts a restrained, rhythm-focused hip-hop marked by soul and funk loops, deliberately gritty textures and a taste for melancholic atmospheres. After beginning on the local scene in the mid-2000s, he gained wider visibility with the album "The Reset" (2010), followed by the instrumental project "Clouds" (2011) and "Gas Mask" (2010) with the group The Left, which established him in American independent rap. Linked with the Mello Music Group label, Apollo Brown went on to record full collaborative albums with rappers such as OC on "Trophies" (2012), Guilty Simpson on "Dice Game" (2012), Skyzoo on "The Easy Truth" (2016) and Joell Ortiz on "Mona Lisa" (2018), while also releasing records centered on his own production like "Thirty Eight" (2014), "Grandeur" (2015) and "Sincerely, Detroit" (2019). His work is characterised by an attachment to the boom-bap format, extensive use of vocal and instrumental samples, and a musical approach that leaves ample room for guest MCs and for shifting moods from track to track.
