Masta Ace

Born in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood in New York, Masta Ace emerged in the late 1980s on the New York hip-hop scene when he appeared on the Juice Crew’s "The Symphony" in 1988 alongside Marley Marl, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and Craig G. His rap, rooted in East Coast aesthetics, relies on clear diction, a carefully constructed sense of narrative and often-storytelling lyrics that combine social observation, dry humor and a distancing from genre conventions. Masta Ace then released Take a Look Around in 1990 and moved toward a more conceptual approach with Masta Ace Incorporated on SlaughtaHouse in 1993 and Sittin’ on Chrome in 1995. After a quieter spell he returned with Disposable Arts in 2001 and A Long Hot Summer in 2004—two albums conceived as continuous narratives that firmly established this scripted dimension in his discography. He continued his career as part of the group eMC, collaborated with Edo G on Arts & Entertainment in 2009 and with MF DOOM on MA Doom: Son of Yvonne in 2012. Masta Ace returned to autobiographical and generational chronicle on The Falling Season in 2016 before working with Marco Polo on A Breukelen Story in 2018 and Richmond Hill in 2024.
