Liars

Born in Brooklyn in the early 2000s around Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill, Pat Noecker and Ron Albertson, Liars first aligned with the New York post-punk and dance-punk scene before quickly shifting its center of gravity toward a more unstable experimental rock, mixing rhythmic tension, noise and repetitive forms. The first album They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top (2001) establishes this nerve base, then Liars clearly changes course with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned (2004) and Drum’s Not Dead (2006), where more abstract structures, insistent percussion and an almost ritual approach to sound appear. Having become a trio with Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross, Liars continues this evolution on Liars (2007) and Sisterworld (2010), before a more electronic turn on WIXIW (2012) and Mess (2014), without abandoning the rough edges or the taste for oblique compositions. After the gradual departure of several members, Liars becomes the main project of Angus Andrew, who returned to live in Australia, and continues in this form with TFCF (2017), TWTWF (2018) and The Apple Drop (2021). Over the years, Liars has circulated between independent rock scenes, festivals and more cross contexts, maintaining an identity made of stylistic ruptures, dry pulsations and a very free relationship between song, noise and abstraction.
