Julian Marley
Born in London in 1975 to a Jamaican family, Julian Marley grew up between the British capital and Kingston, which from the outset roots his work in a back-and-forth between the diaspora and Jamaican culture. A singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he develops a roots-based reggae marked by spiritual and social lyrics, occasionally incorporating dub, dancehall and soul influences. Active on record since the mid-1990s, he released Lion in the Morning (1996) and A Time and Place (2003), before gaining wider international exposure with Awake (2009), a contemporary reggae album nominated for a Grammy. Involved with the family label Ghetto Youths International, Marley regularly collaborates with his musician brothers and has toured extensively in Europe, North America and the Caribbean, often as part of festivals. The release of As I Am (2019) confirmed songwriting focused on spiritual and sociopolitical issues, while Colors of Royal (2023), recorded with producer Antaeus and awarded a Grammy for Best Reggae Album, extends this approach by blending classic reggae with more contemporary touches. Across his projects, Julian Marley remains associated with a strong live aesthetic built around slow grooves, prominent bass lines and vocal harmonies that adhere to roots Jamaican conventions.
