Kool and The Gang

In the late 1960s in Jersey City, New Jersey, Kool and The Gang took shape around bassist Robert "Kool" Bell and his brother, saxophonist Ronald Bell, joined by Dennis Thomas, George Brown, and other musicians drawn from the city's school bands. Initially focused on a blend of jazz, soul, and instrumental funk, the group released a self-titled debut in 1969, then honed a more hard-hitting, rhythmic sound on "Wild and Peaceful" in 1973, where horns and guitar riffs powered compositions built for the stage. From the late 1970s onward, the arrival of singer James "J.T." Taylor and work with producer Eumir Deodato steered Kool and The Gang toward a more vocal R&B close to disco and pop, showcased on "Ladies' Night" (1979) and "Celebrate!" (1980). The band continued this funk and dance direction on "Emergency" in 1984, while keeping horn arrangements and bass lines at the forefront. Over the decades, Kool and The Gang toured extensively, moving from American venues to international festivals, and its lineup evolved around Robert "Kool" Bell. Later releases such as "Still Kool" (2007) and "Perfect Union" (2021) extend a trajectory in which the group navigates between funk heritage, R&B ballads, and club-ready tracks, regularly covered, sampled, or rearranged by other artists.
