illScarlett
Formed in the early 2000s in Mississauga, Ontario, illScarlett developed a blend of alternative rock, ska and reggae driven by a punk-like energy and straightforward pop structures. Centered on singer/guitarist Alex Norman and drummer Swavek Piorkowski, the band first gained attention on the local scene and through impromptu shows near festivals, before appearing at events such as the Vans Warped Tour and a number of Canadian rock showcases. Their debut album, Clearly in Another Fine Mess, was released in 2006 and established a sound defined by syncopated guitars, Jamaican rhythms and catchy choruses, quickly followed by All Day With It in 2007, whose single “Who’s with Me?” received heavy radio play. With illScarlett in 2009 and 1UP! in 2012, the band further refined the balance between reggae rock, ska punk and pop punk, while maintaining strong roots in the young urban culture of southern Ontario. Through tours in Canada and abroad, illScarlett became a regular live presence on alternative circuits, sustaining a concise but coherent discography around this hybrid identity.
