Freak Power

Born in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s, Freak Power brought together Norman Cook (before the rise of his Fatboy Slim project), Ashley Slater on vocals and trombone, and Jesse Graham. The group developed a cross between acid jazz, funk, soul and trip hop, with tracks built on loose grooves, spoken or sung vocal lines, and production shaped by the British club culture of the time. Freak Power emerged in 1993 with the single ‘Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out’, then released the album Drive-Thru Booty in 1994 on 4th & Broadway. The track gained renewed circulation in 1995 upon its reissue, while ‘Rush’ and ‘Get in Touch’ accompanied the project’s early phase. Freak Power continued with More of Everything for Everybody in 1996, where the group extended this formula between offbeat soul, funk rhythms and more hushed electronic touches. A final single, ‘No Way’, appeared in 1998 outside the album, before the project ended at the end of the decade. Reunited on stage in 2024, Freak Power now finds a repertoire directly tied to the British scene of the 1990s, at the crossroads of the dancefloor, alternative pop and groove sounds.
