Incognito

Born on the late-1970s Brit-funk scene, Incognito formed in London in 1979 around guitarist and producer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, who arrived as a child from Mozambique via Mauritius, and bassist Paul “Tubbs” Williams. The band first made its mark in the jazz-funk vein with the 1981 album “Jazz Funk,” before securing a central role in the early 1990s British acid jazz movement thanks to a relaunch on the Talkin’ Loud label and the albums “Inside Life” (1991), “Tribes, Vibes and Scribes” (1992) and “Positivity” (1993). Built as a variable-lineup collective led by Bluey, Incognito alternates instrumental tracks and sung numbers, regularly featuring guest vocalists such as Maysa Leak and Jocelyn Brown, and draws on many musicians from London’s jazz, soul and funk scenes. Incognito’s sound is characterised by tight jazz-funk grooves, melodic brass arrangements and soulful vocal harmonies, with occasional forays into pop and R&B. A strong live act, Incognito has developed a substantial discography over the decades—including “100° and Rising” (1995), “Beneath the Surface” (1996), “Tales from the Beach” (2008) and “Surreal” (2012)—which firmly anchors the band in the international acid jazz landscape.
