Felix Cartal
Born Taelor Deitcher in New Westminster, British Columbia, Felix Cartal first trained in the local punk and hardcore scene before turning to electronic music in the mid-2000s, a path that casts a more upfront light on the edge of his early productions. Emerging on blogs and in clubs in the late 2000s, his music initially sat within electro house and EDM, with taut tracks, sharp synths and an energy inherited as much from rock as from the dance circuit. After the Skeleton EP in 2009 on Dim Mak, Felix Cartal released the albums Popular Music in 2010 and Different Faces in 2012, where his writing opened up more to vocal and melodic formats, though not completely abandoning the club impact. He then embarked on tours and festivals in North America and Europe, and produced remixes and collaborations with artists from neighboring scenes, from indie rock to electronic pop. From the mid-2010s, Felix Cartal evolved his sound toward a brighter, lighter and more vocal house, evident in his singles, remixes and in Next Season (2018) and Expensive Sounds for Nice People (2021). This evolution preserves a clear sense of dance-floor effectiveness while placing greater emphasis on vocal lines, mid-tempo rhythms and a more expansive production.
