Hiromi
Trained on piano from a young age in Hamamatsu, Japan, Hiromi Uehara developed a musical language where jazz, classical and fusion blend with highly rhythmic writing. Discovered at 17 during a concert with Chick Corea in Tokyo, she continued her studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where Ahmad Jamal encouraged her to assert her individuality as a composer and improviser. Established on the international scene, Hiromi first built her career in trio format before exploring more electric lineups with the project Hiromi’s Sonicbloom, which produced the album Time Control in 2007, and later pursuing more intimate solo piano work such as Place to Be (2009) and Spectrum (2019). Over the years she has collaborated with numerous jazz and fusion musicians, notably within the Stanley Clarke Band, and has appeared at festivals like Montreux, North Sea, Newport and Umbria Jazz. Her recent writing has moved toward more orchestral forms with Silver Lining Suite (2021), conceived for piano and string quartet, and into film music with the soundtrack for the anime Blue Giant in 2023. With Sonicwonderland, recorded the same year with her group Hiromi’s Sonicwonder, she explores a more electric, funk‑oriented side of her work, combining piano, keyboards and trumpet in a contemporary jazz strongly shaped by the energy of group playing.
