Elisapie
Born in Moose Factory, Ontario, and raised in Salluit, Nunavik, Elisapie develops songwriting that links Inuktitut, English and French to an indie-tinged pop-folk, often marked by spare arrangements and a strong focus on storytelling. She first emerged as part of the duo Taima with Alain Auger; the album Taima was released in 2004, before she embarked on a solo career with There Will Be Stars in 2009, an intimate record blending song, folk and pop, including a track written by Richard Desjardins set to music by Pierre Lapointe. With Travelling Love (2012) Elisapie explored a more pop-oriented direction, then returned to a more rooted, narrative approach with The Ballad of the Runaway Girl (2018), an album threaded with themes of memory, land and identity. In 2023 she released Inuktitut, a collection of rock and pop covers adapted into her language, extending a cultural transmission already present in her repertoire. Alongside her music, Elisapie directed the documentary Si le temps le permet in 2003 and has written for film, notably on La Planète blanche.
