Dicte

Born Benedicte Westergaard Madsen in Glostrup, Denmark, Dicte has been part of the Danish scene since the late 1980s, with songwriting that moves between rock, pop, soul and blues-inflected textures, without settling permanently into a single register. After early-stage on-stage beginnings in the early 1980s, she settled in Aarhus and participated in several projects before co-founding Her Personal Pain in 1989; the group released Songs From Cinema Café in 1991 and split two years later. Dicte then launched a solo career with Between Any Four Walls in 1994, followed by Voodoo Vibe in 1996, This Is Cool in 2000 and Gone To Texas in 2003, albums where her husky yet supple voice crosses rock formats with rootsy and melodic textures. In 2006, she formed Dicte and the Sugarbones, a band configuration that yielded the album Dicte and the Sugarbones in the same year, then Tick Tock in 2010. Dicte also developed regular collaborations, notably with Claus Hempler, with whom she released The Dark And Stormy Sessions in 2013 and Uppers in 2017. The next phase of her career continued this stylistic openness with Perfume in 2016, All Good As It Is in 2021 and Let’s Escape in 2024, in a vein that blends mature songwriting, hushed rock and American-tinged pop.
