Evian Christ
Born Joshua Leary in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, near Liverpool, Evian Christ has been developing electronic music since the early 2010s that sits between deconstructed club and trance, characterized by dark pads, fractured rhythms and a marked taste for atmospheric forms. The project emerged in 2011 when several tracks uploaded online caught the attention of the Tri Angle label, which went on to release Kings and Them in 2012 and the EPs Duga-3 (2013) and Waterfall (2014). Evian Christ also gained notice outside the strictly electronic circuit by contributing to Kanye West’s Yeezus, receiving a credit on “I’m In It” in 2013, before signing with Warp in 2015. His trajectory spans clubs as well as performance and installation contexts, notably with TranceParty, a series of nights launched in London and Manchester, and The Trance War, presented with David Rudnick at the ICA in London. As an occasional producer for rap and pop artists, he co-wrote “Pneumonia” for Danny Brown in 2016. After the single “Ultra” in 2020, Evian Christ released Revanchist in 2023, his first album, which continues this tense, dense and sculpted writing as much for the dancefloor as for attentive listening.
