Alix Perez

Under the name Alix Perez, Alix Depauw has developed since the mid-2000s an approach to drum and bass that originated in Charleroi, Belgium, and was refined between London, the European scenes and, more recently, New Zealand, where he settled. His work moves between deep drum and bass, liquid funk, halftime, dubstep and other forms of bass music, featuring dense, often melodic writing driven by dark basslines and precise rhythms. After early releases on labels such as Soul:R, Creative Source, Horizons, Fokuz and Shogun Audio, he released the albums 1984 (2009) and Chroma Chords (2013), which broadened his scope beyond the solely soulful register. Over the years he has collaborated with artists including Jenna G, Sabre, Ivy Lab, Spectrasoul and Eprom. With Eprom he formed the duo Shades, active in a heavier and more experimental field, documented by In Praise Of Darkness (2018) and From A Vein (2022). In 2016 Alix Perez founded the label 1985 Music, which has since supported his own releases and those of artists close to an aesthetic combining breakbeats, misty textures and contemporary bass music.
