Jon McKiel

Born in eastern Canada and initially associated with Halifax in Nova Scotia before settling in Baie Verte, New Brunswick, Jon McKiel has since the late 2000s developed a writing approach situated between indie rock, folk rock and psychedelic pop, with songs featuring flexible melodic lines, often hushed arrangements and an approach that blends introspection, misty textures and guitars discreetly distorted. Jon McKiel released The Nature of Things in 2008, followed by Confidence Lodge and Tonka War Cloud in 2011, before a self-titled EP in 2014 that extends this trajectory between indie rock and lo‑fi songwriting. His path then sharpens with Memorial Ten Count in 2017, Bobby Joe Hope in 2020 and Hex in 2024, an album noted in the Canadian music press and included on the Polaris Music Prize longlist the same year. In parallel with his solo records, Jon McKiel participated in the collective project Weird Lines alongside Julie Doiron, C.L. McLaughlin, Michael C. Duguay, James Anderson and Chris Meaney, for an album released in 2016. On stage as in the studio, Jon McKiel is part of a Canadian independent scene attentive to slow forms, floating moods and a rock writing that leaves a significant space for nuance.
