Rockers By Choice

Formed in Copenhagen in 1986, Rockers By Choice was among the first rap groups to establish themselves in Danish. The collective originally brought together Chief 1, Dee Pee, MC Pete, Master Phoze, and MC Swan, with lineup changes over the years, notably around DJ Kool K and Isbjerg, before the core group returned in the early 2000s. Rockers By Choice developed a frontal hip-hop style, anchored in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with productions that crossed rap, funk rhythms and urban pop, in an accessible format without abandoning direct writing. The group emerged on the Danish scene with the singles "Opråb! (Til Det Danske Folk)" and "Engel" in 1988, followed by the albums Opråb! Til Det Danske Folk (1989), Vi Er Generationen Der Ikke Må Fejle (1990), Klar Til Kamp (1992) and De 5 På Flugt (1996). Their trajectory also included live performances, notably in the Danish festival circuit, with a pronounced presence at Roskilde. In 2002, Rockers By Choice re-formed around its original lineup for the compilation Rockers Retro, Greatest Hits, extending the activity of a band that remained connected to the beginnings of Danish rap.
