Dana Gavanski
Born in Vancouver and based in the United Kingdom, Dana Gavanski has since the late 2010s developed a writing that sits between indie folk, folk pop and art rock, with a sober approach where guitar, voice and measured arrangements leave ample room for nuance. Dana Gavanski released her first EP, Spring Demos, in 2017, before issuing the singles 'One by One' and 'Catch' in 2019, co-produced with Mike Lindsay of Tunng, a period during which she also recorded sessions for Marc Riley's show on BBC Radio 6 Music. Her debut album, Yesterday Is Gone, appeared in 2020, followed the same year by the Wind Songs EP, built around covers and a Macedonian traditional chant, a detour that also illuminates Dana Gavanski's cultural background. The rest of her career shows a gradual shift toward looser forms and more angular textures, evident on When It Comes (2022) and later on Late Slap (2024), where her early folk engages more with an oblique pop-writing and a subtle rock tension. In performance, Dana Gavanski appears both solo and with a band, in contexts ranging from small venues to European indie and folk programmes.
