DJ Shadow
Born in San Jose and emerging from the Davis, California scene, Joshua Paul Davis, known as DJ Shadow, developed an approach to instrumental hip‑hop and electronic music based on sample collage, turntablism and compositions that often lack upfront rap, blending funk, soul, ambient, jazz and rock. After beginnings at college radio KDVS, DJ Shadow took part in the Solesides collective and label (later Quannum Projects), then gravitated toward London label Mo' Wax, which in the early 1990s released tracks like "In/Flux" and "Lost and Found", already marked by an aesthetic between trip‑hop and experimentation. His debut album, Endtroducing..... (1996), built from samples, established this method and remains a landmark in his discography. DJ Shadow then worked with James Lavelle in UNKLE on Psyence Fiction (1998), composed the soundtrack for the documentary Dark Days (2000) and continued solo with The Private Press (2002), The Outsider (2006), partly nourished by Bay Area hip‑hop, and The Less You Know, the Better (2011). He launched the Liquid Amber label in 2014, continued collaborative projects with Cut Chemist, and went on to release The Mountain Will Fall (2016), Our Pathetic Age (2019) — which features Nas and Run the Jewels — and Action Adventure (2023), refocused on a fully instrumental format.
