James Emmanuel
Born in Nigeria and based in Edinburgh, James Emmanuel charts a path between gospel, soul and personal songwriting. The son of a pastor, he began singing in church—a background that still shapes his approach to voice, narrative and direct emotion. In Scotland his project evolved through the open‑mic nights and jam sessions of the local scene, where he honed a writing style focused on lived experience and a performance drawing equally from soul tradition and a spiritual heritage. His world blends classic soul, gospel and R&B, with a broad, expressive vocal delivery and songs concerned with resilience, emotional bonds, faith and rebuilding. James Emmanuel’s trajectory between Nigeria and the UK thus informs music of transmission and introspection, carried by a restrained approach to autobiographical storytelling. He is now developing this work as a solo project rooted in Edinburgh’s independent scene.
