Chelsea

Formed in London in 1976 around Gene October, Chelsea were part of the first wave of British punk with a direct, nervous and melodic sound, rooted in late-1970s London punk rock. The band's early days were marked by lineup instability, including stints by Billy Idol and Tony James before they left for Generation X, while Gene October remained the guiding thread of the adventure. Chelsea quickly made a name for themselves with the singles 'Right to Work' and 'Urban Kids', followed by their self-titled first album released in 1979. Over the years, the group evolved its songwriting without abandoning its punk core, incorporating at times a tenser edge, more crafted choruses, and an energy reminiscent of street punk and British rock. Evacuate in 1982 marks an important milestone of this second phase, notably with the arrival of guitarist Nic Austin, who would later become a regular collaborator, as did bassist Mat Sargent from the 1990s onward. Chelsea continued its trajectory with several albums, including Original Sinners (1985), The Alternative (1993), Traitors Gate (1994), Faster, Cheaper and Better Looking (2005), Saturday Night Sunday Morning (2015), Mission Impossible (2017), Meanwhile Gardens (2021) and Evacuate Revisited (2022). A regular on punk stages in the United Kingdom, Europe and North America, Chelsea remains associated with a long history of English punk, balancing on-stage continuity, lineup changes and fidelity to a raw and concise aesthetic.
