UK Subs
Formed in London in 1976 around singer Charlie Harper, the UK Subs initially emerged from the pub rock scene before shifting to punk after the early concerts at the Roxy in London. The UK Subs established themselves in the first wave of British punk with a direct, fast and nervy sound—straddling punk rock, street punk and at times hardcore—while retaining a rock’n’roll undercurrent from Harper’s R&B background. The group’s trajectory has been marked by numerous lineup changes, but Charlie Harper remained the nucleus, alongside key partners such as guitarist Nicky Garratt and later bassist Alvin Gibbs. Verified discographic landmarks include Another Kind of Blues (1979), Brand New Age (1980), Diminished Responsibility (1981), Endangered Species (1982), and later Ziezo (2016) and Reverse Engineering (2022). The UK Subs also left a lasting imprint on the punk circuit through John Peel sessions, regular tours across the UK, Europe and the United States, and recurrent appearances at specialist festivals like Rebellion. Their story also includes a notable episode in 1982, when the band played in Poland amid a particularly tense political climate.
