Staffan Hellstrand

Born in Stockholm in 1956 and largely raised in Nyköping, Staffan Hellstrand has been a central figure in Swedish pop-rock since the mid-1970s, combining personal songwriting, electric guitar and more acoustic formats. Initially active in the bands Dimmornas Bro and later SH!, he launched his solo career in the late 1980s with Hemlös, an album built around poems by Dan Andersson set to music. His repertoire mixes melodic rock, singer-songwriter pop and frequently narrative lyrics, sometimes tinged with social observation. Over the years Hellstrand has released, among others, Eld (1992), Pascha Jims dagbok (1996), Elektriska gatan (2004) and Mordet i Nürnbergbryggeriet (2020), a concept album inspired by a historical incident linked to Stockholm, followed by Sommar (2025). He has also worked with De Lescano and collaborated with The Nomads on several recordings. Alongside his own discography he has written for other Swedish artists, notably Idde Schultz, Irma Schultz and Uno Svenningsson, and penned “Explodera,” Sweden’s official song for Euro 2000. His music remains associated with a direct, melodic and literary writing style, delivered by a restrained voice and firmly rooted in the Swedish scene.
