Ben Nichols
Born in Arkansas and later settled in Tennessee after studying history, Ben Nichols established himself from the late 1990s as the voice, guitarist and principal songwriter of Lucero, a band formed in Memphis in 1998 that sits at the crossroads of American rock, alt-country, folk and a punk-derived energy. Over the years Nichols has developed a direct songwriting style marked by road narratives, the landscapes of the American South and a rough vocal approach that remains central to Lucero’s identity. Alongside the band he began presenting a more stripped-down solo repertoire from 2008, notably as part of the Revival Tour launched by Chuck Ragan. That same year saw the release of The Last Pale Light in the West, his first solo record built around a dark, narrative folk vein. With In the Heart of the Mountain, Ben Nichols returned to a personal format focused on acoustic guitar and vocals, accompanied among others by Morgan Eve Swain, Cory Branan and Todd Beene, in a register where country-folk, Americana and roots rock are treated in a restrained, concentrated manner.
