Svartsot

Founded in 2005 in Randers, Denmark, Svartsot belongs to the folk metal current, combining riffs drawn from melodic death metal, driving rhythms and melodies from the Danish folk tradition. The band, built around guitarist and principal composer Cris J.S. Frederiksen, early on adopted lyrics entirely in Danish, inspired by medieval stories, popular chronicles and Norse mythology, delivered with growled vocals and melodic lines that recall dance music and old ballads. With the albums Ravnenes Saga (2007) and Mulmets Viser (2010), Svartsot established an aesthetic in which flutes and folk themes mingle with strongly rhythmic guitar, before developing a more narrative and darker side focused on the medieval plague on Maledictus Eris (2011). After several lineup changes, Svartsot continued this approach on Vældet (2015), which deepens the blend between traditional motifs and metal structures, and on Kumbl (2021), centred on reinterpretations of songs and airs from the Danish repertoire. Present since the mid-2000s on the European folk and pagan metal scene, Svartsot maintains a steady stylistic axis in which the Danish language, historical references and influences from Scandinavian folk occupy a central place.
