Burna Boy

Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in 1991, Burna Boy—whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu—has steadily established himself on the music scene since the early 2010s with a style he describes as afro-fusion, blending Nigerian afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, hip-hop, and R&B influences. First noticed in Nigeria through mixtapes and then with the single Like to Party, he gathered these early successes on the 2013 album L.I.F.E: Leaving an Impact for Eternity, followed by On a Spaceship in 2015, while building the collective and label Spaceship Entertainment around him. Burna Boy then shuttled between Lagos, London, and major European capitals, shaping a sound informed as much by British urban music as by West African pop, as evidenced by the albums Outside (2018) and African Giant (2019). In 2020, the album Twice As Tall, recorded partly between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, cemented this global positioning and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album. He followed with Love, Damini in 2022 and I Told Them... in 2023, while strengthening his international presence through tours and regular collaborations with artists such as Jorja Smith, Wizkid, Stormzy, and Ed Sheeran, on tracks that weave together social commentary, intimate storytelling, and references to Nigeria’s political and cultural history.
