Derrick Carter
Born in Compton, California, in 1969 and soon linked to Chicago, Derrick Carter made his mark on American house by the late 1980s with a sound steeped in Chicago house, disco, soul and jazz. He began mixing at a very young age, performed publicly as a teenager and developed his career in Chicago, where he also worked at the record shop Imports Etc. He first appeared in several projects—Conception, Symbols & Instruments with Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka, and Tone Theory—before establishing himself more permanently under his own name. His work as a DJ and producer circulated between American and European club scenes, featuring sets that blend deep house, funky grooves and old‑school references. In 1995, Carter co‑founded the label Classic Recordings with Luke Solomon and Chez Damier, an important landmark in his discography. Albums released under his name include Pagan Offering (1998), Squaredancing in a Roundhouse (2002) and Poverty De Luxe (2003). He has also produced remixes for pop and electronic artists while remaining associated with a DJ practice centered on club culture.
