Bongeziwe Mabandla

South African singer-songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla creates an intimate afro‑folk sound nourished by soul and subtle electronic music, carried by lyrics primarily in isiXhosa and occasionally mixed with English. Raised in Tsolo in the Eastern Cape before moving to Johannesburg, Bongeziwe Mabandla shapes a world focused on inner experience, emotional trajectories and collective memory, with melodic writing that stays close to the voice. His debut album, “Umlilo” (2012), established this blend of acoustic folk and choral vocal harmonies; “Mangaliso” (2017) deepened the rhythmic dimension and electronic textures in collaboration with producer and musician Tiago Correia‑Paulo, a recurring partner onstage and in the studio. With “iimini” (2020), Bongeziwe Mabandla assembled a suite of songs that trace the stages of a romantic relationship, using sparse arrangements that leave room for the voice and choirs, while “amaXesha” (2023) expands the palette toward more contemplative atmospheres, where folk ballads, slow pulses and repeating motifs intersect. Active on many stages across South Africa and Europe, Bongeziwe Mabandla belongs to a generation of singer-songwriters who articulate South African vocal heritage, alternative pop and global influences without severing their local roots.
