Bif Naked

From New Delhi, where Beth Torbert was born in 1971, to Vancouver’s rock scene, Bif Naked’s journey spans several countries before settling in Canada, following a childhood with adoptive parents in North America. Initially active in the early 1990s in local bands, Bif Naked gradually established herself as a solo artist in an alternative rock vein infused with punk and pop, marked by a forthright vocal delivery and often autobiographical lyrics. Her first full-length, simply titled “Bif Naked” (1994), set the template—abrasive guitars paired with melodic choruses—further developed on “I Bificus” (1998), “Purge” (2001), “Superbeautifulmonster” (2005), and “The Promise” (2009). Ranging from high-energy rock and more pop-leaning ballads to tracks bordering on spoken word, Bif Naked addresses intimate relationships, identity, and illness in a direct yet accessible tone. Long based in Vancouver, the artist has toured extensively across North America and Europe, contributed to various compilations and film and television soundtracks, while also pursuing work as an author, poet, and actor. Over the years, this trajectory has carved out a singular place for Bif Naked within the Canadian rock landscape, straddling the line between alternative culture and mainstream formats.
