Dâm-Funk

Born in 1971 and linked to Pasadena and then Los Angeles, Dâm-Funk, born Damon Garrett Riddick, has since the late 1980s developed an approach centered on modern funk, boogie, post-disco and an electronic soul with very analog textures. Discovered by Stones Throw in the mid-2000s, he first released Rhythm Trax Vol. 4 in 2007, then the expansive Toeachizown in 2009, a record that lays the foundations of his universe between slow grooves, supple basslines, bright synths and a spoken-sung vocal. Dâm-Funk is rooted as much in the California funk heritage as in a Los Angeles club culture that he also fed with Funkmosphere parties, an important space for local boogie, modern soul and electro-funk scenes. His trajectory then passes through several collaborative projects, notably Higher with Steve Arrington in 2013, 7 Days of Funk with Snoopzilla in the same year, then Nite-Funk with Nite Jewel in 2017. In the meantime, Dâm-Funk released the compilation Adolescent Funk in 2010, drawn from older recordings, then the album Invite the Light in 2015. His sets as well as his productions navigate between futuristic funk, synthetic R&B, slow house and West Coast hip-hop, in a format that alternates producer-work, DJing and live performances.
