DakhaBrakha
Born within the avant-garde Dakh theatre in Kyiv, Ukraine, DakhaBrakha formed in the early 2000s around four musicians and singers drawn from the local theatrical and folk scene. The group developed a style it describes as "ethno-chaos," in which traditional Ukrainian songs, rural polyphonies and dance rhythms are rearranged with elements taken from other world musics, pop, rock and certain experimental music forms. From the start DakhaBrakha worked closely with director Vladyslav Troitskyi, anchoring the project in a striking stage aesthetic that sits between concert and theatrical performance, with costumes inspired by ritual dress and a highly physical stage presence. Over the 2010s the group multiplied its tours across Europe, North America and Asia, moving from theatre stages to world music, jazz and contemporary music festivals. The quartet also contributes to projects for film, dance and the visual arts, establishing DakhaBrakha as one of the most distinctive laboratories for reinterpreting Ukrainian musical heritage in a globalized context.
